BEAHIVE
2 EVENTS ADDED THIS MONTH
(welcome new Kingston subscribers)

Apologies for invading your inbox again so soon... but we've slipped in a couple more events in October: our first semi-official BEAHIVE Kingston event and a new free acting class in Beacon. Why? Because we [hexagon] you.

And a quick shout-out to the several dozen Kingston-area folks just added to our list. Thanks for sharing your thoughts in our survey. We're having a little soirée to introduce our Kingston space and all things BEAHIVE on Monday, Nov. 9 (info).

[BEACON]

10 Questions for the Dalai Lama

Fri, Oct 23, 6:00pm
BYOB Happy Hour @ 6:00
Screening after dusk

No charge — bring friends

This month's film: 10 Questions for the Dalai Lama (2006)
How do you reconcile a commitment to non-violence when faced with violence? Why do the poor often seem happier than the rich? Must a society lose its traditions in order to move into the future? These are some of the questions posed to His Holiness by filmmaker and explorer Rick Ray. Ray examines some of the fundamental questions of our time by weaving together observations from his own journeys throughout India and the Middle East, and the wisdom of an extraordinary spiritual leader. Also included is rare historical footage as well as footage supplied by individuals who, at great personal risk, filmed with hidden cameras within Tibet. Part biography, part philosophy, part adventure and part politics.A New York Times Critics' Pick.

Free Advance Screening of 'The Age of Stupid'
[KINGSTON]

The Age of Stupid

Sat, Oct 24, 6:30 & 8:30pm
314 Wall St, Kingston (Chronogram)
No charge — bring friends

The Age of Stupid is the new four-year epic from McLibel director Franny Armstrong. Oscar-nominated Pete Postlethwaite stars as a man living alone in the devastated world of 2055, looking at old footage from 2008 and asking, Why didn’t we stop climate change when we had the chance?

This special free screening is sponsored by Greenpeace and 350.org — part of the International Day of Climate Action, the largest global day of climate action ever. Concerned citizens from Kingston, Woodstock and the surrounding areas will join together in local action and petitioning.350.org

A guest speaker and press photo op will follow the screening.

This event is one of more than 3000 in 170+ countries to call on President Obama and other world leaders to secure a fair, ambitious and binding global deal in Copenhagen this December at the UN Climate Change Conference.

Adult Acting Class (Free)
[BEACON]

Mon, Oct 26, 7:45pm
No charge
Info/RSVP: 845-453-4329 / guytrenzich@gmail.com

Forget what you thought about acting in high school — that it was the province of pretentious kids who couldn’t make the football or cheerleading teams. Here’s an acting class that has no interest whatever in putting on a production of The Merchant of Venice, but instead aims to increase the student’s self-confidence and empathy in all of life.

Taking the idea of positive visualization a couple of steps farther, you won’t just visualize being a particular sort of person — but actually experience being that person.

Novices very much encouraged to enroll. You’ll learn that you’re actually no novice at all; conscious of it or not, you’ve been acting your whole life, as we all do.

This is the first of what may become a regular class. Facilitated and organized by John Mendels(s)ohn.

BEAHIVE
EVENTS & PERFORMERS & INTERNS

Someone woke up Old Man Winter a bit early last week. (What was that?!) Apparently it's already time to save the date for our holiday party in Beacon with Beacon Citizen Network on December 12. We're looking for food/drink sponsors and performers if you know anyone who would want the exposure.

Meanwhile, we're still looking for an intern or two. They'll get full-time membership to the hive, a growing network of mentors, and a breadth of experience not found in a conventional workplace. Interested or know someone? Read the description and email Scott.

Events: We're not yet open in Kingston (likely December), so all of these below are in our Beacon space.

Solopreneurs Sounding Board (NEW DATE)

$5 public / Free for BEAHIVE members
Register/RSVP

Struggling with a work issue? Need a perspective shift?

Take advantage of collective intelligence ("hive mind") and an inspiring meeting place to brainstorm and work towards creative solutions to problems.

Think of this as a mash-up of an ad hoc advisory board and group therapy for your work. Come prepared to share and to listen.

OPEN HIVE / film - Happy Hour & Film Screening

10 Questions for the Dalai Lama

Fri, Oct 23, 6:00pm
BYOB Happy Hour @ 6:00
Screening after dusk

No charge — bring friends

Join us for this intimate, informal gathering at the hive.

This month's film: 10 Questions for the Dalai Lama (2006)

Also included is rare historical footage as well as footage supplied by individuals who, at great personal risk, filmed with hidden cameras within Tibet. Part biography, part philosophy, part adventure and part politics. If you had only one hour, what would you ask?

A New York Times Critics' Pick: "Expertly merging the mystical and the mundane, Mr. Ray presents a warm and well-rounded portrait of his subject, his Buddhist philosophies and the painful circumstances of his exile."
(85 Minutes)

Each month we show a film with a message, sometimes entertaining, sometimes political, always inspiring, engaging and thought provoking.

We'll start the evening with a kind of bring-your-own happy hour at 6:00 and then screen the film at dusk. We'll have healthy, organic popcorn. Please bring something to drink and other food to share if you like.

BEAHIVE + CHRONOGRAM = BEACON + KINGSTON

Beehives are full of historical symbolism, often representing industry, resourcefulness and collaboration (our favorite). How fitting for this exciting announcement.

ChronogramWe're partnering with Chronogram (Luminary Publishing) to populate another BEAHIVE in Kingston, the third oldest city in New York and our first state capital. It should be buzzing on Wall St. in the historic Uptown District by November.

This partnership will grow our community and our impact, helping us to realize our larger vision. Chronogram nourishes and supports the creative and cultural life of the Hudson Valley — much as we're contributing to the creative, cultural and professional life of Beacon. More details to come.

SEEKING INTERNS
To help us with all of this buzziness and the many more plans we have in mind, we're looking for an intern or two. They'll get free, full-time membership, a growing network of mentors, and a breadth of experience not found in a conventional workplace. Interested or know someone? Check out this description and email Scott.

TRY THE HIVE FOR FREE
Finally, note our first OPEN HIVE / work - Free Workday at the Hive on October 8. Get a taste of what it's like to work here. Get out of your home, Zuzu's, the library, wherever it is you normally labor away and work with us for the day. See what ad hoc collaboration and a warm workplace can do for your productivity and creativity.

BEAHIVE on MeetupAnd check out all the other events we continue to produce and host in Beacon. Some are only for members, some are open to all. See side column. All the details are on our Meetup group. Join so you can get reminders of specific events that interest you.

MEMBER BZZZ

New member: art consultant Dorothy Solomon of DSA Fine Arts.

Anne Dailey has two articles in the Fall issue of Edible Hudson Valley, which isn't yet online but can be found free all over the place: "The Right Cut" profiling Fleisher's Meats in Kingston (!) and "Resetting the Apple Cart" about heirloom varieties.

Paul O'Hanlon did the photography for Anne's aforementioned story on heirloom apples.

Help Kelly Kingman celebrate the grand opening of Clay Wood & Cotton on Saturday, Oct. 10 (4 – 8pm, 149 Main St). Pie and mulled cider (yum), live music and lovely, handmade homegoods.

You Don't Have to Be Buddhist to Know NothingFounder Scott Tillitt — whose other life is doing communications and PR for the public good through Antidote Collective — is promoting Nothing. Seriously, publicity for a book entitled You Don't Have to Be Buddhist to Know Nothing: An Illustrious Collection of Thoughts on Naught. It hits bookstores October 27.

Scott also recently did some publicity for The Buddha Prince, an outdoor walking play celebrating the life and teachings of the Dalai Lama — seen by 3000+ people in Central Park over Labor Day weekend.

TIME TO GET YOUR WORK ON
Summer's heading back south — after a short, hesitant visit. Time to get back to work. Enthused or ambivalent? (You might be eager if you have a place like BEAHIVE to work at!)

Actually, we never really stopped working. We're entering our fifth month with a pretty good rhythm, steadily increasing in tempo. Just look at the sidebar for the whole host of events scheduled for September — including our regular film and game nights, a visioning workshop, a new monthly solopreneur sounding board group (still working on the name), BACA's monthly meeting, and a health workshop for pre-, post- and menopausal women. Some are only for members, some are open to all.

BEAHIVE on MeetupDetails on the events calendar on our site — or on the new Meetup group we just created. We continually hear folks lament missing one of our events because they forgot. Join the Meetup as another way to get reminders of the specific events that interest you.

And mark them in your calendar of choice!

Kelly KingmanNow, an exciting announcement. To help Scott (founder) manage all of this buzziness and the many more plans we have in mind, Kelly Kingman flies in to help the hive. Until a couple weeks ago she was photo editor at the newsweekly The Week. Their loss, our gain.

You probably know Kelly as the founder of our beloved Beacon Citizen Network. She's also a freelance writer and budding entrepreneur. Now that she's fully independent, watch for a bigger presence around the Hudson Valley (see Member Bzzz below for a couple of her myriad projects).

Finally, in last month's Bzzz we included some pics from the HV Real Food tasting event in July. Now we have a nice little video ditty for you, courtesy of our friends The Vaccinated Society. Member Anne Dailey is a rock star!

MEMBER BZZZ
New member: Peter Stemmler, vector and pen illustrator, partner in QuickHoney, whose impressive agency and editorial client list makes you wonder if they do anything besides work. He and his family just moved to Beacon from... Berlin. Willkommen.

Nora Olsen
just sold her first young adult novel, a story about five gay teenagers who travel through time to save the world. More information forthcoming after the contract is signed.

Two of the aforementioned Kelly Kingman's current projects:

  • A retail venture called Clay Wood & Cotton opening this month at the former 400 Square space (149 Main St.) and online. Featuring handmade accessories for the home by both local and national artists. Join their Facebook page to stay up to date on the launch.

BEACON ART SALON AND BEAHIVE HOST EXCLUSIVE EVENT
FEATURING ADVANCE SCREENING OF 'COMPASSION'
FROM SEASON FIVE OF ART:21 – ART IN THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY

Peabody Award-Winning Documentary Series Premieres in October on PBS

Tues, Oct. 6, 8–9:30pm

The Beacon Art Salon (BAS) and BEAHIVE, in partnership with Art21, present a sneak preview of the fifth season of the Peabody Award-winning Art:21—Art in the Twenty-First Century, the only prime time national television series focused exclusively on contemporary art. The Beacon Art Salon is a group of artists and art enthusiasts and BEAHIVE is a shared workspace and collaborative community — both in Beacon, NY.

The event is Tuesday, October 6, 8:00 to 9:30 PM, at BEAHIVE (291 Main Street, Beacon, NY). It features a one-hour screening of the premiere episode, "Compassion," followed by a brief presentation by Stacey Ward Kelly, BAS director and Art21 Institute Teacher. It is free and open to the public and follows the BAS monthly meeting, from 7:00 to 8:00 PM.

BAS founder Stacey Ward Kelly is one of 15 educators chosen nationwide from NY, Chicago and LA to be in the Art21 Educators program, a year-long professional development initiative designed to cultivate and support K-12 art educators interested in bringing contemporary art, artists, and themes into their classrooms.

The "Compassion" episode features artists whose works explore the possibility of understanding and reconciling past and present, while exposing injustice and expressing tolerance for others: William Kentridge, Doris Salcedo and Carrie Mae Weems. Weems incidentally did a photo project in Beacon a few years ago.

The season premieres on PBS the following night, October 7th, with a new episode each Wednesday during the month (10pm (check local listings). Through in-depth profiles and interviews, the four-part series reveals the inspiration, vision and techniques behind the creative works of some of today's most thought-provoking artists.

This screening is part of Art21 Access '09, an international screening initiative created to increase knowledge of contemporary art, ignite dialogue, and inspire creative thinking. Screenings are held at over 300 museums, schools, libraries, art spaces, and community centers and is organized in collaboration with Americans for the Arts' National Arts and Humanities Month.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Employing stop-motion animation, drawing, and performance, William Kentridge creates poignant films and stage productions that transform sobering political events — such as apartheid, revolution, and colonialism — into poetic allegories. Kentridge, a South African artist perhaps most famous for his animated films, and who works in diverse media including sculpture, charcoal drawings, and prints, was included in the 2009 Time magazine 100 most influential people and is currently staging Shostakovich's The Nose for the Metropolitan Opera.

Carrie Mae Weems takes inspiration from colloquial forms — a joke, song, plea, or rebuke — to create complex photographic series that scrutinize subjectivity and insist that pernicious stereotypes be held up to the mirror of everyday emotional and intellectual life. In a recent video and photo series, filmed around the time of the 2008 United States presidential election, Weems reflects upon the legacy of the 1960s that led to this recent historic moment.

Doris Salcedo draws from the oppressive history of her country, Colombia, when creating her work. Her understated sculptures and installations embody the silenced lives of the marginalized, from individual victims of violence in her own country to the larger disempowered populations of the Third World.

ABOUT THE PRESENTERS

The Beacon Art Salon (www.giraffeandturtle.com/bas.html) is a group of artists and art enthusiasts who live, work, show or play in Beacon, NY. The members gather once a month to support one another and build Beacon's art community. Meetings are open to all.

BEAHIVE is a new kind of shared workspace for independent workers and collaborative community in Beacon. It provides a shared, creative work environment for solopreneurs, the creative class, microbusinesses and consultants. It is building a community of members with a range of creative and technical talents and a desire to improve their professional lives, their personal lives and their community.
ABOUT ART21
Over the past ten years, Art21 (www.art21.org) has established itself as the preeminent chronicler of contemporary art and artists through Art:21—Art in the Twenty-First Century. In addition to its PBS series and year-round series-based education and public programs efforts, Art21 has expanded its film production and educational efforts in recent years, including the premiere of the new short-format documentary series Art21–Exclusive on multiple online platforms and expansion of the Art21 Blog. New programs are also in the works, including a feature film as well as Art21 Educators, an ongoing professional development program for teachers.
